Looking for Alaska

Last book I've read...

Looking for Alaska (2005)
Author: John Green
Rating: 5/5

“Sometimes I don't get you,' I said.
She didn't even glance at me. She just smiled toward the television and said, 'You never get me. That's the whole point.”

At last, I've read my most anticipated novel out of John Green's work. I've been hearing a lot of buzz about "Looking for Alaska", but the title is a bit misleading, and made me think of stories about Pilgrims(literally travelling!), until I accidentally saw the book. I actually fell in love first with the cover, and soon with the poignant story of friendship, and love. A thought-provoking novel that was creatively written.(very promising!)

Book Description:
Before. Miles "Pudge" Halter's whole existence has been one big nonevent, and his obsession with famous last words has only made him crave the "Great Perhaps" (François Rabelais, poet) even more. Then he heads off to the sometimes crazy, possibly unstable, and anything-but-boring world of Culver Creek Boarding School, and his life becomes the opposite of safe. Because down the hall is Alaska Young. The gorgeous, clever, funny, sexy, self-destructive, screwed-up, and utterly fascinating Alaska Young, who is an event unto herself. She pulls Pudge into her world, launches him into the Great Perhaps, and steals his heart.

After. Nothing is ever the same.

Bachelorette

Last movie I saw...

Bachelorette (2012)
Directed by: Leslye Headland

Cast:
James Marsden
Kyle Bornheimer
Adam Scott
Kirsten Dunst
Isla Fisher
Lizzy Caplan
Rebel Wilson

"Shut up! I hate you! And I hate you! I'm gonna walk in wearing my pajamas like I'm Michael Jackson."- Becky

It's a shame that I was not really aware of the existence of this hilarious film. I discovered this movie while doing research on Rebel Wilson whom I find irresistibly funny from Pitch Perfect. I was so surprised that Kirsten Dunst, one of my favorite actresses, released a film without me ever knowing until today. The setting is not at all extraordinary, but very entertaining. I enjoyed the actresses, but forget the actors. And even though I don't know much about Lizzy Caplan(this is her first film that I'd ever seen), I find her extremely pretty, and her acting was decent enough. I think she's one of the stars to look out for the following years(crossing my fingers!). I also did not expect Kirsten Dunst, and Isla Fisher to pull off this kind of role, especially with Isla Fisher. Her acting as a stoned dumb-ass is very much convincing which has like a mix of her character from Confessions of A Shopaholic.

There's nothing much to say in terms of technicalities such a cinematography and musical scoring. It's pretty average, but regardless, I enjoyed the exchange of lines, and the shallow plot.

I never watch television..no, I rarely watch TV shows,(sounds better!) but tonight's topic of Pop Talk greatly interest me. They've tried food from 3 places near LRT station, and rate it with these 3 category: food, place and price. Now, I'm dying to eat burgers from Zarks Burger(I'm crossing my fingers that they have burgers for pescatarian..wishful thinking), and cakes of Cuevas.(hunger strike-literally!)

"You guys are gonna get pitch-slapped so hard, your man boobs are gonna concave."-Fat Amy

I watched this film because of the positive feedback from people I know. I'm not expecting much from this production because first of all, I don't really like Anna Kendrick. Second, I saw the trailer, and it's just O-K.. that kind of okay when you can't distinguish if the subject is good or not, maybe both.

Even though I pretty much have an idea on what the story is about, I still want to see it. I kept on convincing myself that this is a "very funny" film, just like what others claimed it to be, betraying my own instinct. Surprisingly, I enjoyed it. Well, not in that way that I would really enjoy a movie, but the point is, it exceeded my expectation apart from of course, Anna Kendrick.(It's not about her, it's about me. I don't find her fit for the story-I suck, I know)

I like the renditions, though it's not that remarkable.(for me) But what I like most is the phasing of the story. The writer did a good job with the plot, and in making it a bit unpredictable. There's actually nothing extraordinary with the setting. It's the same school scenario with leads having their own problems whether its something personal or social, its one thing that you won't miss..it's given. And then there's the popular, nerds, cliques, competitions, and dreams that every lead would want to achieve.(guys, you know the drill) It's a common plot but written, and executed in a rarely decent, and interesting manner.

In terms of technicalities, the acting was okay, especially Fat Amy. She totally nailed her role, and had me laughing so hard(in my mind) with her scenes. Music scoring is above average, and the fact that its a musical theme movie explains it. Cinematography is average. Well it's not the kind of film where you need to be experimental with the shots. Overall, it's okay. A lot of young adults will have fun watching it.

Warm Bodies

This is awesome. I can't wait to see the full movie.

Silver Linings Playbook

Last movie I saw...

Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
Directed by: David O. Russell

Cast:
Bradley Cooper
Jennifer Lawrence

"I do this! Time after time after time! I do all this shit for other people! And then I wake up and I'm empty! I have nothing!"-Tiffany

Someone from work introduced this film, and I got really intrigued to watch it, especially because Jennifer Lawrence is in it. I just can't miss a film of one of my favorite actresses. Yes, that is so wrong.

I had no idea on what "silver lining" means till I did my research.(haha) It actually came from the saying "Every cloud has a silver lining" which translates to "Good things in bad situations".(Hmm interesting) I also read some trivia with Anne Hathaway, Mark Wahlberg, and other stars such as Angelina Jolie who were considered for the lead roles.(impressive list!) I never imagined that the pre- production of this film would involve such names, because it only means that the people involved with the production are good, maybe even great with this craft.

I thought that this film would really bore me, but it didn't. Somehow it reminds me of Lars and the Real Girl, maybe it's the way that the story bites you unexpectedly.

I'm also so surprised, and deeply impressed with Bradley Cooper. Before his nothing to me, but one of the funny good looking actors from Hangover, but this film change it. Now, he's the great actor from one of the best films of 2012 who portrayed a mentally ill character that doesn't only look but also feels so real. It's given that Jennifer Lawrence is a great actress, but its another thing to see an actor who didn't impress you to be this good.(major improvement!)

I'm so in love with the story. The writer deserves a trip to Europe, all expense paid, because this is an award winning story. I like the insights about one's self, relationships(be it friendly or romantic), and family ties. I like the music scoring which I think really suits the feel of the plot. Cinematography is as interesting as the shots. Overall, this is a film that every human must see.

On My Own

I used this piece in an audition for a Theater Group, and became one of the memorable songs of my life. Eponine is the pitiful girl who sang it in Les Misérables, and would always be my favorite character. I'm also satisfied with Samantha Barks' performance in the movie adaptation.

"I love him
But every day I'm learning
All my life
I've only been pretending
Without me
His world will go on turning
A world that's full of happiness
That I have never known"

Les Misérables

Last movie I saw...

Les Misérables (2012)
Directed by: Tom Hooper

Cast:
Hugh Jackman
Russell Crowe
Anne Hathaway
Amanda Seyfried
Eddie Redmayne
Helena Bonham Carter
Sacha Baron Cohen

"To love another person is to see the face of God."-Jean Valjean

The current talk of the town. We had been waiting for this since 2012, and we can't just contain ourselves that we'll finally about to see it. We had an amazing race experienced just to see it in big screen.(very funny!) I first learned about Les Misérables from T.V shows that featured one of our country's pride Lea Salonga. She participated internationally with the musical production of Les Misérables, and I don't really care back then, but in college, I started to look up to her. We we're required to use "On My Own" as an audition piece for TEATRO Lasalliana, and I kept on watching her jaw dropping performance as Eponine. Ever since I've seen her as Eponine, it became my favorite character, and On My Own as one of my favorite songs.

I thought that this is the third film version of the infamous Victor Hugo's novel, but it seems that there are a lot of adaptations according to Stuart Fernie. The most recent release of Les Misérables in motion picture before this production is in 1998. It includes Liam Neeson as Jean Valjean, Geoffrey Rush as Javert, Uma Thurman as Fantine and Claire Danes as Cosette. My friend saw the old version, and she's quite satisfied with it.(I have to watch it!)

There's a lot of talk about the 2012 version for Les Misérables which only fuels to our excitement. The first time we heard about the cast, we were already amazed on how star studded this film would be. I'm excited to see on how they'll play the love triangle of Cosette, Marius and Eponine. I don't really know the flow of the story so I was expecting too much for a wrong reason. I have a colleague who knows a lot about Les Misérables. She told me about her experienced of watching the theater version in London, and explained the flow of the story, and realized that the love triangle I'm anticipating for, all a long is not the focus of the story. It's also because of her that I had the impression that this is a major tearjerker, but apparently not. Yes, some parts can make you really sad, and cry, but just for two scenes, and not for the entire film.(that goes for me)

I was really surprised while watching this movie. I know that its a musical film, but I'm thinking of Moulin Rouge kind of musical. I didn't expect them to sing every line which made it look like a theater production in big screen.(very impressive!) And what's more fascinating is the fact that their lines were not studio recorded, but were instead recorded live on set.(wow!) This is the first time that I've seen an approach, and I can't imagine how long did they film each of the scenes to for a flawless material. They might have spent less time with editing because majority of the scenes were already corrected real time.

I'm really all praise with this version. It has a great set design, great acting especially for Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway, but Russel Crowe owns the crown for belting his lines, and consistently being on tune. The writer did great on delivering all of the events in a well written, fast paced manner.(some said they find it boring, and has a very slow pacing, but I disagree) Anne Hathaway's I dreamed a dream made me tear, and I consider as one of the notable scenes of Les Misérables. After watching this movie, we can't still stop talking about it.

An Abundance of Katherines

Last book I've read...

An Abundance of Katherines (2006)
Author: John Green
Rating:5/5

I had fun reading it. There's a lot of insights that are pretty obvious in life, but we still managed to ignore. It reminds me of The Perks of Being a Wallflower, however Colin is totally different with Charlie, but both interesting and relatable. It's the first time that I've read a fiction with footnotes, and it isn't bad for a first, though it's a bit tedious to read sentences in smaller font sizes, it helps on explaining complicated context. I also learned few trivia bits, some pretty interesting, and some are too technical especially the application of mathematics to formulate the theorem.(major nosebleed!)

Nonetheless, I like it, and I'm excited to read the rest of his books :)

Book Description:
When it comes to relationships, Colin Singleton's type happens to be girls named Katherine. And when it comes to girls named Katherine, Colin is always getting dumped. Nineteen times, to be exact. He's also a washed-up child prodigy with ten thousand dollars in his pocket, a passion for anagrams, and an overweight, Judge Judy-obsessed best friend. Colin's on a mission to prove The Theorem of Underlying Katherine Predictability, which will predict the future of all relationships, transform him from a fading prodigy into a true genius, and finally win him the girl. Letting expectations go and allowing love in are at the heart of Colin's hilarious quest to find his missing piece and avenge dumpees everywhere.
